Currently, reports on shifts in animal and plant distributions and phenology greatly outnumberstudies investigating shifts in inter- and intra-annual fungal fruiting and occurrence.Moststudies arebased not only on mushroom-forming fungal observations but also herbarium or museum specimens. While natural history collections are an invaluable resource to investigate, depositions of new specimens have substantially declined over the last several decades and particularly in the eco-regions that cover Nebraska. This has thus limited our ability to assess, for example, historic species distributions and how they have been impacted by environmental and land-use changes, fungal species of conservation concern, and/or extant populations.
Our long-term goal is to catalogue and provide a current account of the composition, diversity, and spatial distributions of macro-fungal species found in natural ecosystems across Nebraska.
